5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing   July 23, 2010

I purchased my D2 over three years ago. Since then, I have never had any problems, at all.
The sound quality is excellent as is all the features you get.

I won't go into all the details since many have done that already (Although I have not experienced any negatives as some have).

Battery life is unbelievable. I use my MP3 primarily when I do walking/running exercising. Unfortunately,I haven't done any in the last two years (getting lazy). This last week, I started walking again and took out the D2. I haven't used this in two years and it STILL had 3/4 battery charge left. Amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Don't fool by its look   June 20, 2010

This is the best MP3 player I've own so far. As musician, I have sensitive ears and relatively picky on sound quality, but this one uphold my expectation. If you are looking for something flashy and careless about sound quality, don't get this. Otherwise, this is one of the best portable player for true music enthusiasts.

Pros:
- Sound quality is excellent. Make sure you get a good pair of headphone to keep up with the quality.
- Support FLAC and many other formats. Also the foreign text support is very good (Chinese, Jap, Korean.....)
- Upgradable firmware.
- Super long battery life (Plus very slow battery drain when not in use).
- Very good DSP and equalizer makes the sound even better.
- Memory size, its huge with swappable SD card slot.
- Bang for the buck, not something like I*** that only rip you off with cheap stuff and bad sound quality.

Cons:
- Design. Looks plain (If you just try to show off your music player, don't get this).
- Dimension. I prefer it to be a bit flatter, so can get a bigger screen and feel thinner in pocket.
- Touch screen sensitivity. No argue that Apple has the best touch screen in the market.
- Only touch screen playback control, discourages blind control.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome product!   June 20, 2010

I've been using this for a few days, and extremely impressed with the sound. The most noticable thing so far is that the sound coming out of this thing is amazing. I haven't even had the opportunity to fiddle with any of the sound settings yet the sound is as good or better than what you'd get from a high end stereo system. It also plays flash (applications, games, etc) yet the ipods/iphones do not play. The FM reception is wonderful. Although I never had a problem with the firmware I read somewhere that someone suggested upgrading the firmware which was extremely easy to do & took about 2 minutes. The player supports 4000 songs/pics/video/etc files on the internal memory and an additional 4000 files on the external card. I bought a 32 GB card which gives me a total of 48 GB of space which is amazing capacity. The touch screen is very easy to use.

4 out of 5 stars Cowon D2+, firmware 2.13   May 27, 2010

I'll just mention a few specific things that come to mind after six weeks using this player.

The positives:

1. Sound quality without BBE: very good sound, provided you do not use the EQ or BBE sound effects. See negative 1 below. Clear separation of instruments, and a nice wide 3D image. Clean (not bumped up) bass and low mids.

2. Useful battery life. I charge it once every two weeks, which is nice.

3. Drag and drop file copy from Windows XP, with id3 tag organization, works flawlessly for me.

4. The music 'currently playing' interface is useful and attractive. It has just about all the information I want to see, all visible without digging through track info sub-menus and screens. Album art works perfectly (you need Cover.jpg in each album folder), and looks nice.

5. Standard mini-USB connection.

6. Nice color screen. Some high bitrate xvid dvd rips I made look very clear, with good color saturation, and play without an issue.

For me, the negatives are:

1. Sound quality with BBE: after extensive listening with my Sony MDR-V6 and MDR-V900 headphones, the "BBE+" effects and the equalizer all constrict and recess the stereo image, smear the presentation, and weaken the bass and low mid drive (even when boosting the bass using "M3B", ironically). This is very disappointing since Cowon bills these features as a huge advantage of this player over others. No I am not a purist - this dsp suite just does not do the D2 any favors when using quality headphones. Having said that, when using my JLab J3 earphones, +6db of EQ at 3.2k and 11.7k really perks them up.

2. It does not play Audible AAX "e" files. Only level "4".

3. Nested menu system where, for example, you are forced to do 4 screen taps to get from your currently playing song back to your list of albums.

4. When you browse your music library, after 10 seconds without making a selection the D2+ will automatically return you to the current song. This cannot be disabled.

5. There is no place on the player to store the included stylus, other than tying it to the lanyard slot. You can ditch the stylus, but the use of tiny scroll bars and buttons in the interface design makes navigation with a finger difficult at best.

Summary:
The D2+ has a few nice features; but I have to take off a point for lack of Audible aax file support, some bad navigation design, and the poor BBE+ dsp feature.

2 out of 5 stars Nice, but problematic   May 9, 2010
Gregory Ravizza
I bought the D2+ based on my experience with the original D2 (1GB), which is still running, but was limited by capacity and format (I prefer flac files over ogg). Reading the reviews, I do agree that the interface took a bit of getting used to, but was similar to the original. Additionally, it seemed to fit my requirements for a music player (I don't watch videos).

The reason this device gets the rating is due to two problems. The first was that whenever I used the SDD card, it appeared to corrupt the the Music database to the degree where the unit would freeze up and restart, not to mention overwriting almost all of the music file names with some randomly selected file name repeated over and over again. There is no mention of use of the SDD card in either the "Quick Guide" in the package, or the larger user manual PDF included in the disk.

Once I started dealing with that issue, the volume up ("+" button on top of the device) stopped working and appeared to be stuck.

After getting an RMA from Cowon (tech support could only offer sending the unit in for "analysis" regarding the DB corruption issue - or whatever it was - I decided to return the unit for a refund. I'm not sure what I'm going to replace it with, but I prefer the Cowon and it's Linux-friendly and open formats, so I may get another Cowon, just not the D2+.
