| Customer Reviews: Excellent MP3 player if a bit expensive September 6, 2010 W. Xu To be honest, after reading numerous posts on iAudiphile or ABI about bugs,I was a little scared when I first purchased the J3. However, my worries were a waste for I am very pleased with my new J3. So far, my J3 has frozen once but I believe that was because I did not update the firmware (2.03 when I got it, now updated to 2.22). After the firmware update, the J3 no longer froze. I've had it crash once while looking at videos but this was fixed with a pinhole hard reset.
Touch-screen: For any touch-screen player, one of the most important features is how sensitive the touch-screen is. I am glad to say that the touch-screen is very intuitive. I only need to tap once in order for the player to respond. Also, the screen is absolutely beautiful when it comes to watching videos or browsing through photos. It's very clear and the colors are very vibrant.
UI: I like the fact that one of the UI options (the list) shows you how many files are in each folder and how much battery life you have. However, I like the third one the best, the one where you get to do a little customization. You can drag buttons around so that you can easily access the ones you want. There are also widgets for quicker access, such as the Quick Player, which allows you to quickly play/pause or fast forward/rewind your music. Compared to the Zune HD, the J3's UI isn't as smooth though. It can be quite a pain when you want to search for an artist/album/song through hundreds. There isn't a way to access a particular section of the alphabet though a quick flick will quickly send you from one end of the alphabet to the other. If you're having difficulty finding the file you want, you can bring up a keyboard that will allow you to type and search for the file. You can search for songs by artist/album/title/year/genre. If you tilt your J3, you will be able to browse for music using Matrix, which basically allows you to search for songs via album art only.
Battery life: Battery life is very long though I've yet to see it reach the said 64 hours. Only if you're working under ideal conditions, such as using the lowest brightness setting or never touching the screen might you be able to last the battery longer. I was constantly touching the screen and using the built-in speaker so this might have been a reason to the reduction of battery life. The battery gets warm after about half an hour of use but it hasn't gotten scalding hot yet, only lukewarm.
Sound quality: The sound quality is wonderful! When using the built-in speaker there was no static, unlike my old Mach Speed MP3 player. The stock earphones aren't that great though (but when has there been a good pair of stock earphones). When I first wore them, I heard static but they got canceled out when I went outside. Cowon has always been known for BBE equalizers. I've yet to understand how to use them so I haven't been able to test them out yet. But, equalizer or not, the J3 has some of the best sound quality I have ever heard, definitely better than the Zune HD or the iPod Touch.
Games and Applications: Of course, perhaps no MP3 player can compete with the wide range of apps available for the iPod Touch. The J3 only comes with one game: Hunter. Hunter is a game that utilizes the gravity sensor, and players have to tilt their J3 around in order to avoid getting hit by black floating dots. There aren't that many applications available on the J3. You get a simple calculator, an analog clock, a notepad, a keyboard, and a stopwatch.
Video: It seems that a lot of people out there care about video, though I personally don't really care all that much. I promise you that you will not be disappointed by the J3's video capabilities. The J3 supports a wide variety of file types such as .avi or .wmv. With an AMOLED screen, the graphics are just absolutely beautiful and the colors vibrant. You can even set up bookmarks, browse by chapters, and even set up subtitles. Videos can be viewed in 16:9, 4:3, or zoom.
Other functions include a voice recorder and an FM radio. I haven't used these yet so I can't tell you how these worked out.
Overall, I am very satisfied with my J3. I only wish that it could be a little less expensive. Also, to be honest, it could be a little better for a player priced around $196. If apps are what's important to you then go ahead and get the iPod Touch, though you can add your own flash games and other apps to your J3. However, if you actually care about your video or sound quality, then definitely get the J3. Don't even think about getting the iPod.
